Cougars Cruelly Denied!

Cougars Cruelly Denied!

Ash Wyeth18 Mar 2016 - 08:54

The Cougars travel to Yeovil for their last away game of the season, looking for at least a point in the closing stages of the league.

With positions in the middle of Premier 2 league switching on a weekly basis KS are having to push hard to protect their chances of a top 5 finish.

The match started with both sides exchanging blows, KS moving swiftly across the middle to attack space on the right and Yeovil countering with quick balls to the inside channels to pull a great early save and clear from KS keeper Claire Jones.

Running on to a cross as the match neared the 15 minute mark the Yeovil centre forward suddenly dropped as her knee gave way. Play was immediately stopped for ten minutes as she was obviously in considerable pain whilst an ambulance was arranged, the injury looking to be a dislocated knee.

The game resumed with both sides getting back into their stride, Yeovil opening the scoring in a busy D.

Scanning through the midfield Emily Read connected with Laura Kerly to deliver a great ball into space. Driving on the angle Kerly made short work of her defender before firing a crisp finish past the advancing keeper to pull KS level.

Bex Darke worked hard delivering a rock solid holding roll on the left, shutting down the Yeovil half and opening her passes into the KS midfield for some early transitions, with Sarah Budgen working in front to pressure the elusive Yeovil right winger.

Yeovil broke to take the lead against the run of play before the Cougars pulled level again, as goal of the season contenders seem to be becoming a habit!

Building as Read Junior carried into space a quick link with Helen Symons took good ground upfield on the move. As the arrowhead rotated Kerly broke ahead and left to take the defence splitting pass from Symons and draw the keeper. Sensational stick and ball skills coupled with quick feet kept Kerly on her open side as she rolled in towards the left baseline, allowing her to scan across the D and connect with Chloe Harvey. Slipping a perfectly weighted ball calmly past the keeper Kerly caressed the pass onto Harvey’s extended run for the captain to finish an outstanding team goal.

Resuming after half-time saw both sides in contention with Yeovil breaking hard but KS building the more structured attacking play and explosive on the break. Kerly came close again as the Yeovil keeper saved well at the edge of the D and Symons saw a dragflick parried just wide from a short corner.

Tess Baker delivered another great performance at right wing throughout the game, pressing out from the track back with strong balls into the channels and finding superb space and width on the breaks, coming close to scoring as she picked up a loose ball at the back post but just being denied by a last ditch block.

Lou Read kept the midfield structured as play moved from end to end, leading the support around the 25 and making clever use of long angled aerials to negate the Yeovil press. Fi Wadey secured the back with an unbeatable channel and defensive block that allowed her to drive out and back up the KS counters time and again.

Yeovil edged out an advantage in the closing 15 with slightly fresher legs, making good use of their rolling subs to keep the pace high and make the Cougars work. KS were giving their all in holding their own, driving towards the final whistle on tiring legs as they battled against every decision going to the home team.

A turnover in possession just outside the KS 25 finally cost the Cougars as Yeovil quickly played a one-two at top D to their left side forward who swept first time past Jones to sneak Yeovil in front with 4 minutes remaining.

Despite KS pushing back hard, Yeovil sat on possession and looked to run out the clock, aided by a green card for Symons reducing KS to ten men for the final 2 minutes as she questioned the lack of a KS free hit for an obvious foul during a Cougars attack.

The final whistle blew on a match where the Cougars did more than enough to earn at least a point, holding the upper hand for long spells of the first half, delivering flowing attack play to create the better chances in front of goal and defending with great structure.

At post match teas Rachel Roberts took the Coaches Player award for her determined performance in defence throughout the game, making vital interceptions against the Yeovil breaks and aggressively defending her D, Emily Read and Fi Wadey shared Woman of the Match.
