Kingsbridge and Salcombe 2nd team began their 2025 season with a challenging fixture against Plymouth Lions 2, a side recently relegated from Division 2 South.
From the outset, the squad knew this would be one of the toughest matches of the campaign. Their strategy was to move the ball quickly with short passes, maintain communication, and remain composed under pressure.
However, a well-drilled Lions side wasted no time in breaking down the defence, scoring an early goal. It was clear from the opening minutes that the Lions were determined, and adjustments had to be made — tighter marking and dropping an extra player into the back line.
Debutant Charlotte Perry stood out with an outstanding performance, showing determination to reach every ball and making crucial clearances. In goal, Sarah Budgen produced a string of phenomenal saves, with most of the Lions’ goals coming only from second or third attempts.
Kingsbridge and Salcombe also had moments of promise. Moving confidently out of defence, midfielders Sam, Poppy, and Lisa linked play effectively. On the right, Poppy and Emma H combined well with Emma W in the middle, creating some neat passing triangles. Newcomer Alice impressed up front, showing tenacity in chasing the ball and composure under pressure. Despite these efforts, Lions went into half-time with a commanding 6-0 lead.
After regrouping at the break, the team focused on keeping the Lions out of their attacking 25, marking their key players closely, and sustaining their passing game. While the Lions continued to press, Kingsbridge and Salcombe showed grit and determination throughout the second half, working tirelessly until the final whistle.
Special credit goes to goalkeeper Sarah Budgen, who stepped in after already playing for the first team earlier in the day. Her commitment and resilience were widely praised.
Ultimately, the Lions ran out 11-0 winners, but Kingsbridge and Salcombe took plenty of positives from the match — including their teamwork, passing spells, and fighting spirit.
